Pink is for Boys

Did you know that pink was originally thought of as a masculine color?

"In Western culture, the practice of assigning pink to an individual gender began in the 1920s[13] or earlier.[14] From then until the 1940s, pink was considered appropriate for boys because being related to red it was the more masculine and decided color, while blue was considered appropriate for girls because it was the more delicate and dainty color, or related to the Virgin Mary.[15][16][17] Since the 1940s, the societal norm was inverted; pink became considered appropriate for girls and blue appropriate for boys, a practice that has continued into the 21st century.[18]" Excerpt from Wikipedia

I have always thought it odd that many men dislike pink. Countless times I have overheard men say  "Real men don't wear pink" or "Pink is for girls". Really???? Such nonsense! Pink is for everyone!

Even my dear son is convinced that pink is not something young men wear... aaahhhh, how do I convince him otherwise? How can I tell him that real men look sexy in hot pink with out him saying 'oh mom'? How do I tell him to not believe everything he hears and know that he takes it to heart? Why be like everyone else, be different, be yourself, but most of all be happy no matter what!!!

For Valentine's this same son made 26 miniature watercolor masterpieces for his classmates and teacher. Here is a sampling (my apologies for the picture quality, as my husband has our camera down in Florida)...

HAPPY VALENTINE'S EVERYONE!!!May you all have a wonderful and heart filled day! And to all the fellas...maybe it's time to rethink PINK!

  1. I love Charlie's valentine cards!!!!! They're beautiful. And I love pink on boys (and men). Why, just the other day, one of my boys wore a pink shirt and he looked great.

  2. I did not know this! Both my husband and son will wear pink ties(start there with your little guy) and on one of my first dates with my husband, he was wearing a bright pink polo...and I loved it!

  8. Those drawings are so fun-- what a sweet thought for Valentine's. Neat history on pink too! I will have to repeat that the next time I hear a guy say that "pink is for girls." Take care, Caroline
