Above is the living room I redesigned for my friend using mostly second hand furniture, which I showcased the before and after a few weeks ago here. Why am I calling it a Recessionista Redesign? Because the total cost of the redesign was less expensive than a brand new sofa from Pottery Barn. Not only was it a great deal, but also earth-friendly and fresh...can't go wrong with that!
So here is the breakdown by item, location of purchase and price:
1. Console, Joseph's Coat in Falls Church (a thrift store benefiting shelters for abused women), $30 + $20 for Benjamin Moore custom paint. Total: $50
2. Lamps, Salvation Army, $10/both + $10 for 2 cans of low VOC spray paint in bright white. Total: $20
3. Lampshades, new from LampsPlus, $60/both.
4. Chairs, already owned.
5. Mirror, Craigslist, $50
9. Pillows, borrowed for photo shoot.
10. Sofa, Craigslist, $120 + $49 for new slipcover in white from Ikea. Total: $169
Grand Total for the Recessionista Rental Redesign: $608
Why buy new when second hand is just as fabulous, stylish, earth friendly and easy on a Recessionista's wallet?

Ahhh- mazing! Totally amazing. I love the room and am shocked by the price tag. Just genius.

really lovely! i really like the blue walls and the striped rug ;)
ReplyDeleteI love this makeover. You did an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hangout on your blog for awhile and go through your archives, but your faint stripes on the background make the page scroll in a most annoying slow way. What are the chances of you removing them? Seriously, I have noticed this on other striped blogs (Mr. Good will Hunting) as well. It makes me sad, cause I really want to look, but the page moves too slowly.
Totally inspired!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDelete@anonymous...change complete, thanks for the input!
Beautiful! WOW, this whole room for under 1,000, way under!!! You are good girl!
ReplyDeleteWow. Wow. Wow. I can't believe how much you can do with only $600. Amazing. It looks so fabulous.
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful! I love the rug!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
ReplyDeleteNow it looks fresh and fabulous.
I remember this stunning room you did!! And what a bargain!! Recessionista reigns!!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you find the affordable slipcover for the couch? All the slipcovers I have seen cost more than the couch itself!
ReplyDelete@ anonymous...it's an Ikea sofa and they sell basic affordable slipcovers for all of their sofas. The color selection is limited though.
ReplyDeleteHey1 I have that coffee table. Its from Pier 1.
ReplyDeleteToo funny...we got this one off of Craigslist. :)
DeleteLove, love, love the color of the console table. You said it was a Benjamin Moore custom paint ... any chance you could share the formula? It's exactly the color I'm looking for and, so far, have not come up with anything close to your console table! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI'll do a post asap :).
DeleteI absolutely NEED to know what color you used on your walls?! I love them along with the red sofa table. The pop of color is perfect.
ReplyDeleteHey Suzette...I'll do a post on the colors asap. I just have to look into my records to find it again. As for the console...it was custom, but there is a color that BM has that is close and I'll search for that too. D
DeleteNice job. Love the coffee table. Did you guys end up finding some permanent budget-friendly throw pillows?
ReplyDeleteI am in love with this room. Could you share the fabulous wall color information?
