Best Mid Century Modern Source in DC

Source Unknown

If you are like me, then you can't be pigeonholed into one style. I love it all from Hollywood Regency,  French Provincial, Classic English to Mid Century Modern. I go through phases sometimes, but more or less am just attracted to great design. And I search for it all on Craigslist. While searching specifically for Mid Century Modern I began to notice that most of the best and affordable pieces came from someone located in Friendship Heights NW. I contacted the seller and met the nicest guy ever, Jose. He has a huge collection of gorgeous Mid Century Modern pieces at great price points. Here are a few items he has on Craigslist right now...

Vintage 60's Club Chair Orange Vinyl $245

Broyhill Brasilia Bar $295

To search his items type in: mid century modern Friendship Heights or you can also type in his phone number 202-276-8755. Look for the white stone background in the image and purchase if you find something you like. A good friend of mine recently purchased a MCM sofa and he loves it.

Here are a few inspirational interiors with Mid Century Modern pieces to get you, well uh, inspired ;)...

Craigslist This Space

In lieu of Fridays Finest Finds, I thought I'd change things up a bit and start a new weekly post called Craigslist This Space. I'll share an inspirational image and recreate the scene by finding similar pieces on Craigslist in the DC metro area and supplement non-secondhand items when necessary. So here we go...

Below is a very eclectic and energetic space designed by Windsor Smith for her L.A. home...

Recessionista Rental Redesign

Images courtesy: Peter Vanderpoel

Above is the living room I redesigned for my friend using mostly second hand furniture, which I showcased the before and after a few weeks ago here.  Why am I calling it a Recessionista Redesign? Because the total cost of the redesign was less expensive than a brand new sofa from Pottery Barn. Not only was it a great deal, but also earth-friendly and fresh...can't go wrong with that!

So here is the breakdown by item, location of purchase and price:
1. Console, Joseph's Coat in Falls Church (a thrift store benefiting shelters for abused women), $30 + $20 for Benjamin Moore custom paint. Total: $50
2. Lamps, Salvation Army, $10/both + $10 for 2 cans of low VOC spray paint in bright white. Total: $20
3. Lampshades, new from LampsPlus, $60/both.
4. Chairs, already owned.
5. Mirror, Craigslist, $50

6. Coffee Table, Craigslist, $35 + $10 for 2 cans of low VOC in bright white. Total: $55
7. Rug, new from Ikea, $199.
8. One framed artwork (all others already owned), Joseph's Coat, $5.

9. Pillows, borrowed for photo shoot.
10. Sofa, Craigslist, $120 + $49 for new slipcover in white from Ikea. Total: $169

Grand Total for the Recessionista Rental Redesign: $608

Why buy new when second hand is just as fabulous, stylish, earth friendly and easy on a Recessionista's wallet?

African Feather Headdress

I recently found a fabulous and reasonably priced shop on Etsy and thought I'd share with you all. The shop is called African House. It is based out of North Carolina, although all of their items are African or African vintage. Their African Headdress's are my favorite and come in a multitude of colors...

Pink / Hot Pink Hat White Juju HatOrange Juju Hat Purple Juju Hat Yellow Juju Hat

Priced at $315, I think they are a great buy compared to what I've seen elsewhere. In fact Jonathon Adler sells identical feather headdress's for $725.

I think they add a great punch of color and interest on walls...

Local Artist: Sabrina Cabada

I had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina awhile ago at a local art/gift store, unaware until recently she was an artist herself and an incredible one at that. I love to support artists in general, especially local ones, so I couldn't wait to share. She lives in Arlington, Virginia where she creates her masterpieces and recently became the art director of a new art gallery, Artspace 109. She also created a blog, An Artful Nature, where she catalogs her interests in art, decor, fashion, food and creative living.

Below are just a few examples of her paintings...

"Bad Call'     12" x 18" Acrylic on Canvas

"Beach II"    18" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

"Apples"     20" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas

She uses vintage wallpaper for the background below...

"Day Dream"     10" x 10" Acrylic on Canvas

"Doorway II"     12" x 18" Acrylic on Canvas SOLD

"Don't Get Caught"     18" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

Another with vintage wallpaper in the background...

"Morning Tea"     10" x 10" Acrylic on Canvas

Beautiful aren't they? I love her use of color and can envision a nice grouping on a white wall above a comfy sofa. If you're interested in purchasing any of these and want to see her other creations please visit her website at SabrinaCabada.com
